Refugee Ministry 2.0

Helping New Americans to Thrive

At Love INC of Sheboygan County, we believe in more than just offering a hand to those in need—we walk alongside them, helping them thrive. From April through December 2024, we worked with the State of Wisconsin’s Bureau of Refugee Programs to resettle dozens of families. Together with partner churches and volunteers, we provided essential support to refugees during their transition to a new life. Today, the vast majority of refugee households have at least one working adult and are expanding their English language skills. The children are thriving in school, quickly learning our language and customs. Still, the road to becoming part of a new culture in a strange country far away from all that is familiar is a long one. Navigating cultural differences while learning a new language and way of life can be confusing.

The term refugee indicates the legal immigration status of individuals entering the United States through a vetting system. Refugees are people who have fled their home countries to escape conflict, violence, or persecution and have sought safety in another country. earn about the stages refugees go through before arriving in the United States by reviewing the detailed Refugee Journey PDF.

Volunteer Opportunities with the New American Support Team

Family facing homelessness

Imagine fleeing your home country in fear of your freedom, your life, or the lives of your loved ones. Many refugees share this traumatic experience. Navigating a new way of living in an unfamiliar culture with new customs and expectations can be daunting, especially when refugees are still learning the language. You can help a family by offering a ride to English class, speaking English with them, or answering questions they may have about life in America.
